{"id":1408,"date":"2008-10-30T08:08:34","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T16:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2008\/10\/30\/the-end-2\/"},"modified":"2008-11-06T19:19:29","modified_gmt":"2008-11-07T03:19:29","slug":"the-end-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2008\/10\/30\/the-end-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The End"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s bad enough that &quot;Rolling Stone&quot; has morphed into &quot;Esquire&quot; for a slightly younger generation, with a perfect binding that makes it impossible to fully grasp Angus Young&#8217;s mug, he looks like some origami trick from the back cover of &quot;MAD&quot;, but what had me blowing chunks was the ad four pages into the magazine&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 &quot;THE DOORS INSPIRED CHUCK TAYLOR&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Are you fucking kidding me?\u00c2\u00a0 I thought that John Densmore had a lock on this kind of shit.\u00c2\u00a0 Or maybe that was just the band&#8217;s music.\u00c2\u00a0 Their image&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I love the Doors.\u00c2\u00a0 Their first album was transcendent.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve never ever owned a pair of Chuck Taylors.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m just not a Converse kind of guy.\u00c2\u00a0 To tie up the Doors with Chuck Taylor is like hooking up Metallica with Maypo.\u00c2\u00a0 What&#8217;s next, the Stones for Stride-Rite?<\/p>\n<p>Shit, is there no commercial opportunity these bands won&#8217;t turn down?\u00c2\u00a0 The concept of legacy has been completely forgotten.\u00c2\u00a0 But, a great band&#8217;s music never will be.\u00c2\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t that the lesson of AC\/DC, that despite refusing to whore themselves out, endorse products, feature their music in commercials, they own the second biggest selling catalog?<\/p>\n<p>Respect the music.<\/p>\n<p>But no one buys that anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 Our whole country has lost its dignity.\u00c2\u00a0 As Ray Davies once sang, money talks and we&#8217;re the living proof.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re educated, you&#8217;re an elitist.\u00c2\u00a0 You should be working a blue collar job like a real American, not prepared for change that might come down the pike, and about to be fired because the man shipped your job overseas.\u00c2\u00a0 Forced to buy all your goods at the big box store known as Wal-Mart that raped your city&#8217;s downtown and replaced reasonable jobs with low-paying gigs akin to those in a jail.\u00c2\u00a0 Not as guards, but as PRISONERS!<\/p>\n<p>Has the Doors music been forgotten?\u00c2\u00a0 What caused the last renaissance, twenty five years ago?\u00c2\u00a0 When suddenly everybody wanted to listen to &quot;The End&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 There was no advertising then, just WORD OF MOUTH!<\/p>\n<p>God, does the Vatican have to do a deal for the Sistine Chapel?\u00c2\u00a0 To make sure people continue to come?\u00c2\u00a0 Too bad Picasso&#8217;s dead, otherwise he could be hawking scarves for Target.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, couldn&#8217;t they do one of those ads where they take footage and he appears with his daughter Paloma? Just because the body&#8217;s cold doesn&#8217;t mean you can&#8217;t make some money on it.<\/p>\n<p>And did Jim Morrison even OWN a pair of sneakers?\u00c2\u00a0 Never mind Chuck Taylors?\u00c2\u00a0 I remember him dressed in black.\u00c2\u00a0 The Ramones were big on canvas shoes, but not the rockers of the sixties.<\/p>\n<p>But Chuck Taylor&#8217;s got a lot of bread.\u00c2\u00a0 They want to make the brand cool.\u00c2\u00a0 And their advertising agency likes the Doors&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 I mean who&#8217;s cooler than Jim Morrison?\u00c2\u00a0 So you make an offer of beaucoup bucks and the only person who gets fucked in the ass is the fan.\u00c2\u00a0 I respect the act.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not whoring myself out.\u00c2\u00a0 How do you expect me to buy music if I can&#8217;t respect it?<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s next?<\/p>\n<p>Come on&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Can&#8217;t John Lennon sell glasses?<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe that&#8217;s Buddy Holly&#8217;s purview.<\/p>\n<p>And if the Doors are in danger of being forgotten, how about Sinatra?<\/p>\n<p>If the music is great, it&#8217;ll last forever.\u00c2\u00a0 And that&#8217;s why classic rock endures.\u00c2\u00a0 Because of its greatness.<\/p>\n<p>The Doors might not sell quite the tonnage of AC\/DC, but that&#8217;s because their music is cerebral.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s for people who want to delve a bit deeper, who want to think.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a rite of passage for those who read Vonnegut and Hesse in high school as opposed to dropping out and working at the 7-11.
