{"id":1406,"date":"2008-10-29T12:01:53","date_gmt":"2008-10-29T20:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2008\/10\/29\/annie-use-your-telescope\/"},"modified":"2008-11-06T19:19:10","modified_gmt":"2008-11-07T03:19:10","slug":"annie-use-your-telescope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2008\/10\/29\/annie-use-your-telescope\/","title":{"rendered":"Annie Use Your Telescope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I woke up needing to hear a record.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, this need evidenced itself the multiple times I woke up last night.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to going to bed, I listened to Jack Mannequin&#8217;s new album, &quot;The Glass Passenger&quot;, on my iPod as I read the newspapers.\u00c2\u00a0 Distracted, the music as background, the album started to reveal itself.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d given the new album a few spins prior to the gig, but it hadn&#8217;t penetrated me.\u00c2\u00a0 And yesterday, I was playing &quot;Into The Airwaves&quot;, &quot;The Mixed Tape&quot; and &quot;Holiday For Real&quot; over and over again and then I needed to listen to something new.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s when I dialed up &quot;The Glass Passenger&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Gig hangover.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to play any music on the way home from the gig.\u00c2\u00a0 When I was growing up, I&#8217;d enter the house in the dark, fire up my mother&#8217;s stereo and listen to the vinyl album of the act I&#8217;d just seen on headphones.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want the experience to die, I reveled in it.<\/p>\n<p>In the seventies, I&#8217;d never read without a record playing in the background.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s how I learned the album cuts.\u00c2\u00a0 Like &quot;Old Mister Time&quot; on 10cc&#8217;s &quot;Bloody Tourists&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;re deep into your reading material, the music emanating from the other side of the room, and then one track envelops you. You look up, stare at the wall, catch every lick.<\/p>\n<p>Today I use an iPod.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have to cross the room to play the track again.\u00c2\u00a0 I can just hit repeat.\u00c2\u00a0 Which I kept doing last night, needing to hear &quot;Annie Use Your Telescope&quot; again and again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">It started feeling like October<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is October.\u00c2\u00a0 The hottest on record in SoCal according to my buddy.\u00c2\u00a0 Summer hangs on a long time in L.A., but by now I&#8217;ve usually turned on the heat.\u00c2\u00a0 But despite Accuweather predicting a decline in temperatures, this has not happened.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s hot summer days, although cooler nights.\u00c2\u00a0 The kind of weather east coasters move here for, the kind of weather Angelenos burn out on.\u00c2\u00a0 Like Barbra Streisand in that movie, we&#8217;re looking for some RAIN!<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s dark out, I&#8217;m reading by the lamp, and this aural landscape is playing in my ears.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s majestic.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a beat-driven opus made to sell products, to ring a cash register.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a track someone had to cut, to tell his story.<\/p>\n<p>In the nineties we moved to a hit-driven world.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s all the A&amp;R guys wanted.\u00c2\u00a0 Even the rock stations had tight playlists.\u00c2\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t want any tune-outs.\u00c2\u00a0 But what built this business was the album cut.\u00c2\u00a0 The problem is not iTunes, but the purveyors.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking for instant riches, they jammed the track, surrounded it with crap and then whored it and its performer out to such a degree that we could be burned out on an act in a year. Whereas acts used to develop, unfold on the scene.\u00c2\u00a0 We were less interested in their sales history than their musical explorations.\u00c2\u00a0 Where were they going, what did they have to say?\u00c2\u00a0 What happened in their lives that made them not only become musicians, but led them to make this music.<\/p>\n<p>Yesteryear&#8217;s music wasn&#8217;t made for everybody.\u00c2\u00a0 Check the sales figures for confirmation.\u00c2\u00a0 Even the Beatles didn&#8217;t sell ten million copies of an album in the States.\u00c2\u00a0 Your music was for your scene, your scene supported you.\u00c2\u00a0 So I don&#8217;t expect everybody to like &quot;Annie Use Your Telescope&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>But I do.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s all that counts.<\/p>\n<p>You listen to this music in your house and go to the gig to hear it replicated, to have an ultimate experience.<\/p>\n<p>We live in a nation of winners.\u00c2\u00a0 Zac Efron, Paris Hilton, fabulous people whose lives work.\u00c2\u00a0 But then we see Paris crying on her way to jail and child stars getting hooked on drugs, sometimes o.d.&#8217;ing, even committing suicide.\u00c2\u00a0 We don&#8217;t live in a nation of winners, but a nation of people.\u00c2\u00a0 All imperfect.\u00c2\u00a0 HD reveals Cameron Diaz has a bad complexion.\u00c2\u00a0 Plastic surgery can perfect your body, but you appear strange, everybody can tell, because perfection doesn&#8217;t exist in the wild.\u00c2\u00a0 Music used to speak to this truth, to the person who felt like a square peg in a round hole.\u00c2\u00a0 Music reached out and told you you were okay, that it was okay to dream, to lick your wounds, that tough times were de rigueur and with this music playing you could get through.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Annie Use Your Telescope&quot; is not a one listen smash.\u00c2\u00a0 Not something that can sell razors or zit cream.\u00c2\u00a0 But play this alone, long after dark, and you&#8217;ll feel the power of music.\u00c2\u00a0 Washing over you, bathing you, wiping away all the detritus of everyday life and giving you hope.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"margin-right: 0px;\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">Go to: <a title=\"Jack Mannequin MySpace\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/jacksmannequin\">Jack Mannequin MySpace<\/a> It&#8217;s the second track.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I woke up needing to hear a record.
