{"id":1397,"date":"2008-10-22T18:57:04","date_gmt":"2008-10-23T02:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/archives\/2008\/10\/22\/albums-2\/"},"modified":"2008-10-28T08:15:15","modified_gmt":"2008-10-28T16:15:15","slug":"albums-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lefsetz.com\/wordpress\/2008\/10\/22\/albums-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Albums"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Albums are for fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Singles are for newbies.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you&#8217;re nobody, and you&#8217;re not live-based, focus on the single, that&#8217;s all people want.\u00c2\u00a0 Hook &#8217;em with a few singles and you&#8217;ve suddenly got fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Who want more.\u00c2\u00a0 Does this mean a full-length, with fifteen tracks and seventy eight minutes of music?\u00c2\u00a0 Probably not.\u00c2\u00a0 After all, they&#8217;ve just come to know you.\u00c2\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to get married after the first date.\u00c2\u00a0 So, feed &#8217;em three or four tracks.\u00c2\u00a0 At an incredibly discounted price on iTunes if you must, a package price.\u00c2\u00a0 Build slowly.\u00c2\u00a0 And whenever you get a good-sized fan base, don&#8217;t overload them all at once!\u00c2\u00a0 Today&#8217;s albums are incomprehensible.\u00c2\u00a0 Too long, never mind too expensive.\u00c2\u00a0 Better to put out three tracks five times a year than fifteen all at once.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only do you maintain your buzz, your audience stays bonded, doesn&#8217;t go on a hejira somewhere else, waiting years for your next opus, possibly forgetting you in the interim..<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve already got a fan base, release that album if you must.\u00c2\u00a0 But know that non-fans don&#8217;t care.\u00c2\u00a0 And, if they come to care via airplay, old wave media, they only want THE TRACK!\u00c2\u00a0 If you learn of an act from a friend, you might want an album.\u00c2\u00a0 But if you&#8217;re dipping your toes, you don&#8217;t want to get soaking wet!<\/p>\n<p>As for keeping your tracks off iTunes&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 What are you about, money or a career?\u00c2\u00a0 AC\/DC is gonna sell a whopping number of albums at Wal-Mart, but they&#8217;ve got no buzz online at the iTunes Store, their album and its single tracks don&#8217;t appear on the chart, never mind front page advertising.\u00c2\u00a0 If you want to play an untelevised World Series, be my guest.\u00c2\u00a0 But why play outside the stadium, by yourself.\u00c2\u00a0 Some people would rather play basketball in Europe for more money, but most want the glory, and will stay here in the U.S.A.\u00c2\u00a0 (Furthermore, the salary might be less, but the endorsements, the peripheral income, adds up.)\u00c2\u00a0 You can reach those who truly care outside of iTunes, but the casual user, newbies, they&#8217;re not gonna be affected, they&#8217;re gonna be completely out of the loop, which is going to hurt you in the long run.\u00c2\u00a0 iTunes is the Big Kahuna, why would you want to play outside its parameters?<\/p>\n<p>So if you&#8217;re making an album, don&#8217;t think of world domination.\u00c2\u00a0 Think of satiating your fans.\u00c2\u00a0 If you must, include a catchy single for radio airplay.\u00c2\u00a0 But it probably won&#8217;t get airplay and will quite possibly alienate your core audience.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re only about the core, don&#8217;t sell out, feed your homies.\u00c2\u00a0 But, if you want someone new, sell individual tracks online, allow people a taste.\u00c2\u00a0 Better yet, give them a taste for free, just like dope dealers.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re purveying really good shit, people will want more and will get hooked.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Albums are for fans.\u00c2\u00a0 Singles are for newbies.
