videos.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never purchased anything from a TV advertisement, in my mind &quot;infomercial&quot; equates to &quot;scam&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 But Bobby couldn&#8217;t resist.\u00c2\u00a0 He wrote down the phone number.\u00c2\u00a0 He called.\u00c2\u00a0 And for months, he&#8217;s been receiving DVDs.<\/p>\n<p>But that wasn&#8217;t the only music he wanted to show me, we also had to watch &quot;Hullabaloo&quot;!<\/p>\n<p>It was snowing like a motherfucker, actually, Bobby and Brandy had planned to go to a gig, but like teenagers in the seventies, we stayed home and watched DVDs.<\/p>\n<p>While we were waiting for the hotel to deliver a deck, Bobby reached into a gym bag and extracted a handful of cases.\u00c2\u00a0 He asked me to pick what I wanted to see.\u00c2\u00a0 Scoping the titles, I settled on Heart.\u00c2\u00a0 Come on, you remember &quot;Magic Man&quot;!\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t buy that album, or the one after that, but &quot;Magic Man&quot; and &quot;Crazy On You&quot; were FM staples.<\/p>\n<p>So Bobby extracted the disc and inserted it into his PowerBook, so we would waste no time in our viewing experience.<\/p>\n<p>My mind was fucking blown.\u00c2\u00a0 Were the Wilson sisters ever that young?\u00c2\u00a0 Was I ever that young?<\/p>\n<p>You get old and you gain contempt for the late teens and early twentysomethings.\u00c2\u00a0 They haven&#8217;t lived, how good could they be?\u00c2\u00a0 But our heroes of decades past were just as young.\u00c2\u00a0 In these videos, Ann Wilson is 25, her sister Nancy is 21.\u00c2\u00a0 But if you were their parents, you wouldn&#8217;t let them out of your sight!<\/p>\n<p>Fire up &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=4gpNqB4dnT4\">Heart &#8211; Crazy On You<\/a>&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Blow it up full screen (hit the icon in the lower right-hand corner of the player).\u00c2\u00a0 You gain new respect for Nancy&#8217;s chops.\u00c2\u00a0 But look at Ann!\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;s wearing those ethereal seventies stage clothes, which are anything but revealing.\u00c2\u00a0 Hell, her dress goes down to her knees!\u00c2\u00a0 And there&#8217;s not a line in her face!\u00c2\u00a0 If it weren&#8217;t for her throaty, powerful vocals, you&#8217;d think she&#8217;s a teenage girl as opposed to a woman.\u00c2\u00a0 And what vocals they are!\u00c2\u00a0 No melismas.\u00c2\u00a0 Just passion.\u00c2\u00a0 The band wrote this song, better than Clive Davis dreck, remembered to this day.\u00c2\u00a0 To think that a music star now is an &quot;American Idol&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Youngsters might think this video hokey.\u00c2\u00a0 But you&#8217;ve got to understand, bands were not ubiquitous thirty years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 You had to go to the gig.\u00c2\u00a0 You lived to go to the gig, to feel the sound, to soak up the atmosphere, to feel alive!<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the superior &quot;Magic Man&quot; here: <a title=\"Heart Live - Magic Man\" href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=TznFRPeZRbc\" target=\"_blank\">Heart Live &#8211; Magic Man<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Not superior as a video, but as a musical experience.<\/p>\n<p><em>Come on home girl, mama cried on the phone<br \/>Too soon to lose my baby and my girl should be at home<br \/>But try to understand, try to understand<br \/>Try try try to understand<br \/>He&#8217;s a magic man, mama, ah&#8230;<br \/>He&#8217;s a magic man<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Wilson had lost her daughters to rock and roll.\u00c2\u00a0 You want to talk about Hall of Fame inductees&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Heart deserves to be there, even more than Madonna.\u00c2\u00a0 They forged the path and they rocked!\u00c2\u00a0 This was not singer-songwriter stuff, these girls could hold their own with the boys!<\/p>\n<p>Then we watched a little &quot;Hullabaloo&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 That truly made me feel old.\u00c2\u00a0 The seventies were more comfortable, in color.\u00c2\u00a0 The black and white &quot;Hullabaloo&quot; seemed to be from another century (actually, it was!)\u00c2\u00a0 With straight hosts like Sammy Davis and lip-synching.\u00c2\u00a0 But we did get to see Len Barry mime &quot;1-2-3&quot;!\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe elementary, but I challenge you to cut a record this good.<\/p>\n<p>Then Bobby inserted a DVD from the U.K.\u00c2\u00a0 Of performances from the Jools Holland show.\u00c2\u00a0 All from this century.<\/p>\n<p>I told him to fire up Zero 7, I wanted to hear &quot;In The Waiting Line&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Bobby wanted to watch David Gray.\u00c2\u00a0 Massive Attack was fascinating.\u00c2\u00a0 Dido was the antithesis of U.S. posturing, she looked like she&#8217;d just rushed in from the tube.\u00c2\u00a0 But the most riveting clip, the one we had to watch from beginning to end, that we didn&#8217;t speak during, that we couldn&#8217;t take our eyes off of, was Antony and the Johnsons.<\/p>\n<p>Someone e-mailed me about this act a couple of years back.\u00c2\u00a0 I downloaded a few tracks.\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t get it.\u00c2\u00a0 But watching the clip, I was brought back to the sixties and Laura Nyro.\u00c2\u00a0 Both sounded not quite like anybody else.\u00c2\u00a0 You couldn&#8217;t put your finger exactly on their talent.\u00c2\u00a0 Neither was classically beautiful.\u00c2\u00a0 But you were touched in a way Top Forty radio never reaches you, you felt the power of rock and roll.<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p>Go to:\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Antony and Johnsons - Hope There's Someone {Jools Holland}\" href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=6kMIFDm7rS8\" target=\"_blank\">Antony and Johnsons &#8211; Hope There&#8217;s Someone {Jools Holland}<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I know, you&#8217;re asking yourself&#8230;is this guy gay?\u00c2\u00a0 I mean what&#8217;s up with his hair?\u00c2\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t he go on a diet?\u00c2\u00a0 Let go of your American preconceptions, just watch.\u00c2\u00a0 This completely live performance.<\/p>\n<p>This guy isn&#8217;t doing it for the audience, he&#8217;s doing it for himself.\u00c2\u00a0 You believe he&#8217;s been tortured his whole life, criticized for being himself, so he holed up in his bedroom and wrote this song and nervously, he&#8217;s playing it for us live.<\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t see the intro of this clip on the DVD.\u00c2\u00a0 We had no idea of Antony&#8217;s history.\u00c2\u00a0 All we got was the music.\u00c2\u00a0 And that was enough.\u00c2\u00a0 Great music needs no context.<\/p>\n<p>The business is tanking because everybody&#8217;s playing it safe.\u00c2\u00a0 They want surgically-enhanced stars, who don&#8217;t write their own material.\u00c2\u00a0 Who they can get commercials for, who they can get sponsored.\u00c2\u00a0 What Fortune 500 company is going to go into business with Antony and the Johnsons?\u00c2\u00a0 Public companies would run!\u00c2\u00a0 Top Forty radio would laugh at the prospect of playing the music.\u00c2\u00a0 The irrelevant rock formats are too caught up in oldies and formulaic hard stuff to take a chance.\u00c2\u00a0 So greatness languishes.\u00c2\u00a0 But greatness is out there, it exists.<\/p>\n<p>Watch this clip in its entirety.\u00c2\u00a0 It will render you speechless.\u00c2\u00a0 If for no other reason than your brain will be unable to process it, will wonder what the fuck it is!<\/p>\n<p>What this is is rock and roll.\u00c2\u00a0 Music that tests the limits that touches your heart.\u00c2\u00a0 Not pabulum.\u00c2\u00a0 Not entertainment.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather tuneage that demands your attention.\u00c2\u00a0 That enriches your life.<\/p>\n<p>You wonder why the U.K. music scene is healthier than that of the U.S?\u00c2\u00a0 Because of shows like Jools Holland&#8217;s.\u00c2\u00a0 Where everybody plays live, where it&#8217;s only about the music.\u00c2\u00a0 Music still gets respect in the U.K.\u00c2\u00a0 Here, it&#8217;s just a tool of the man.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bobby said I had to come to his room to watch DVDs.
