Matchbox Twenty &quot;Exile On Mainstream&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 25,701<br \/>Percentage change: -15%<br \/>Cume: 299,862<br \/>Weeks on: 5<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m surprised they haven&#8217;t already released a NEW version, with additional tracks, just to fuck over the losers who bought this package in the first place.\u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m surprised they haven&#8217;t already released a NEW version, with additional tracks, just to fuck over the losers who bought this package in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>You know Rob Thomas caught a lot of flack the first time around.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve come to believe he&#8217;s quite talented.\u00c2\u00a0 And the hits on the Matchbox Twenty debut were pretty damn good.<\/p>\n<p>If you throw off your hipster hat and listen to &quot;Back 2 Good&quot;, you&#8217;ll be enraptured.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually authentic.\u00c2\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t you like to get it back to good, after things are fucked up?\u00c2\u00a0 And how come you never can&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Once you&#8217;ve broken up, once you&#8217;ve fought, it&#8217;s toast.\u00c2\u00a0 You can try, but it&#8217;s fruitless.<\/p>\n<p>And &quot;Long Day&quot;&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Has got an early seventies feel.\u00c2\u00a0 Kind of a cross between McCartney and American bands, with a dose of nineties sheen&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 The acoustic intro is enrapturing.\u00c2\u00a0 The dynamics&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Not quite &quot;Kashimir&quot;, but still good.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s &quot;3 am&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t you lonely at that hour?\u00c2\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you hate waking up alone at that hour?<\/p>\n<p>But the piece de resistance is &quot;Push&quot;.<\/p>\n<p><em>She said I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;ve ever been good enough<br \/>I&#8217;m a little bit rusty, and I think my head is caving in<br \/>And I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;ve ever really been loved<br \/>By the hand that&#8217;s touched me, well I feel like something gonna give<br \/>And I&#8217;m a little bit angry, well<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever had self-doubt?\u00c2\u00a0 Have you ever wondered if you&#8217;ve been good enough?<\/p>\n<p>I have.<\/p>\n<p>And if you haven&#8217;t played for a while, you feel rusty, and you don&#8217;t trust yourself.\u00c2\u00a0 But you&#8217;re committed, you&#8217;re hanging in there, you&#8217;re giving them the benefit of the doubt.\u00c2\u00a0 Then you find out you were wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 And you get angry, AND YOU WANT TO PUSH THEM AROUND!\u00c2\u00a0 You want to take them for granted.\u00c2\u00a0 But you just can&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 And it hurts SO bad.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get it with the studio version.\u00c2\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve got a live acoustic take from a Star 98.7 Christmas record that taught me the greatness of this song.\u00c2\u00a0 There are slowed-down acoustic versions all over the P2P services.\u00c2\u00a0 Look for one.<\/p>\n<p>And what do you do with a band that played the Top Forty game in an era where Top Forty is a shadow of its former self.\u00c2\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t try to be credible, they reveled in their moment in the spotlight.\u00c2\u00a0 But now there is no spotlight.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;re talented, but the vast majority of the public has a bad taste in its mouth.<\/p>\n<p>I wish it was solely about songs.\u00c2\u00a0 But more important now is your relationship with your fans.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s got to be a bond.\u00c2\u00a0 And when you&#8217;re all over TV, you&#8217;re fans with Katie Couric, with\u00c2\u00a0 Carson Daly, you&#8217;re removed from the street.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like leaving your hometown honey for a supermodel.\u00c2\u00a0 When she dumps you, where are you then?\u00c2\u00a0 POSITIVELY NOWHERE!<\/p>\n<p>The stardom game Matchbox Twenty played is dead.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe their label can run a single up the chart, but it still won&#8217;t help the band&#8217;s career.\u00c2\u00a0 They need to go on a club tour.\u00c2\u00a0 They need a fan club at MusicToday.\u00c2\u00a0 They&#8217;ve got to come down from the pedestal and INTERACT!<\/p>\n<p><strong>40. Neil Young &quot;Chrome Dreams II&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 20,260<br \/>Percentage change: -62%<br \/>Cume: 74,363<br \/>Weeks on: 2<\/p>\n<p>No one cares.\u00c2\u00a0 The album got pretty good reviews, I haven&#8217;t listened to it, I have no idea how good it is.\u00c2\u00a0 But Neil&#8217;s fans just want to relive their salad days, they want to hear him play cuts from &quot;Harvest&quot;.\u00c2\u00a0 He&#8217;s making new records, but he&#8217;s a nostalgia act.\u00c2\u00a0 Not that the press treats him this way.\u00c2\u00a0 This guy gets coverage like he&#8217;s selling double platinum.\u00c2\u00a0 Funny era&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 If you want to know what&#8217;s going on in culture, don&#8217;t read the newspaper, nor the magazines, dive into the blogosphere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>43. James Blunt &quot;All The Lost Souls&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 9,980<br \/>Percentage change: -22%<br \/>Cume: 230,975<br \/>Weeks on: 7<\/p>\n<p>Where do they come up with these album titles?\u00c2\u00a0 Did James know it would be a self-fulfilling prophecy?<\/p>\n<p>Does this guy have any fans?\u00c2\u00a0 Do those that exist even know the record came out?<\/p>\n<p>No one cares.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the modern record business.\u00c2\u00a0 Where the major labels and mainstream media conspire to jam shit down our throats, and although they may get us once, we don&#8217;t get fooled again.<\/p>\n<p>No one thought James Blunt was real except himself.\u00c2\u00a0 They just wanted a nostalgic song that made them think about love.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s it, no more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>111. Ryan Adams &amp; the Cardinals &quot;Follow The Lights&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 7,817<br \/>Percentage change: -58%<br \/>Cume: 26,409<br \/>Weeks on: 2<\/p>\n<p>Did you know this EP came out?\u00c2\u00a0 Come on, how would you know?<\/p>\n<p>This is an artist in search of a business model.<\/p>\n<p>We had to endure the endless hype how his previous record, &quot;Easy Tiger&quot;, released at the end of June, was the second coming, a return to form.\u00c2\u00a0 Only it wasn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>But this guy always comes up with a keeper or two.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he needs a chart on his homepage.\u00c2\u00a0 His fans telling those passing through which songs are necessary, and which aren&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe he needs a fan club with automatic delivery.<\/p>\n<p>I applaud the fact that he&#8217;s writing, that he&#8217;s a working musician.\u00c2\u00a0 I would check out everything he does if it was e-mailed to me when it was completed.\u00c2\u00a0 But to find out about releases, to read reviews&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>You can tell with Ryan with one listen.\u00c2\u00a0 I want to hear a song and decide whether I want to keep it, and delete the rest.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m cool with that.\u00c2\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t want to buy everything, make an investment, to find out I&#8217;m not interested in hearing the vast majority ever again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>116. Puddle Of Mudd &quot;Famous&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 7,221<br \/>Percentage change: -18%<br \/>Cume: 60,083<br \/>Weeks on: 4<\/p>\n<p>No they&#8217;re not.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m stunned they&#8217;ve even got a new record.<\/p>\n<p>A band with hits but no fan base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>120. KT Tunstall &quot;Drastic Fantastic&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 6,595<br \/>Percentage change: -16%<br \/>Cume: 124,182<br \/>Weeks on: 7<\/p>\n<p>I really like KT.\u00c2\u00a0 But this record did not get good reviews.<\/p>\n<p>She was the girl of the moment because of a ton of media exposure, in TV, movie trailers, ads for all I know.\u00c2\u00a0 All I do know is &quot;Black Horse and the Cherry Tree&quot; and &quot;Suddenly I See&quot; were on every corner, it appeared she had broken through.\u00c2\u00a0 But she was still playing clubs.\u00c2\u00a0 People liked the songs, it&#8217;s just the bond with the fan base&#8230;didn&#8217;t really exist.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe all those commercial endorsements and TV placements sell the tracks featured, but don&#8217;t do much for your career.\u00c2\u00a0 You get noticed, but that&#8217;s about all&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 People see you, but they&#8217;re not in love with you.\u00c2\u00a0 When they discover you more organically, they love you.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Kind of like the Moby syndrome.\u00c2\u00a0 He licensed the tracks from &quot;Play&quot; EVERYWHERE and then never had another hit.\u00c2\u00a0 Then again, he never cut anything nearly as good thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>I think you have to settle for less.\u00c2\u00a0 Better to have a bunch of buddies than a plethora of casual friends, people you can count on as opposed to those who are only into you because you&#8217;re flavor of the moment.<\/p>\n<p>This business is sick. It&#8217;s based on selling tonnage, and then getting the buyers to go to the gig.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s just that this isn&#8217;t happening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>125. Melissa Etheridge &quot;The Awakening&quot;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sales this week: 6,154<br \/>Percentage change: +11%<br \/>Cume: 112,011<br \/>Weeks on: 6<\/p>\n<p>This shouldn&#8217;t be on a major label.\u00c2\u00a0 She&#8217;s positively NICHE!\u00c2\u00a0 You might see her all over the media, but no one cares.\u00c2\u00a0 She needs to stop playing to everybody and start playing to her CORE again.<\/p>\n<p>Do you own the very first album?\u00c2\u00a0 She wasn&#8217;t smiling.\u00c2\u00a0 She needed success.\u00c2\u00a0 She needed it for her LIFE!\u00c2\u00a0 There was no calculation.<\/p>\n<p>This is sad.\u00c2\u00a0 Because she&#8217;s got a modicum of talent.\u00c2\u00a0 But she&#8217;s so busy being a celebrity&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 And celebrityhood doesn&#8217;t sell records.\u00c2\u00a0 Just ask Paris or Lindsay.\u00c2\u00a0 Or Jessica Simpson!<\/p>\n<p><strong>140.
